The One With the Wedding Dresses

Ross and Rachel engage in a conversation regarding Ross’s upcoming wedding plans. Rachel, while outwardly supportive, pretends to be content with the situation, citing the seriousness of her relationship with Joshua. Meanwhile, Emily finds a wedding dress in London, but it is unavailable in her size; however, a store in New York has it in stock. Monica and Phoebe offer to retrieve the dress, and during the trip, Monica tries it on. Ross then announces that the wedding is scheduled to take place in four weeks. In a surprising turn of events, Rachel impulsively asks Joshua to marry her, to which he declines, ultimately ending their relationship. As Rachel reflects on her feelings, it becomes clear that she is struggling with Ross’s future plans, having always envisioned a future with him. In an effort to uplift Rachel’s spirits, Monica, Phoebe, and Rachel dress up in wedding gowns together.

• Chandler does a little dance in this episode to show that his dancing is unattractive to women. Later on, in The One Hundredth (1998), Chandler does the same dance again, and Monica tells him to stop, proving his earlier point.
