Joey showcases his new apartment to his friends. Chandler and Joey, missing each other, watch Baywatch in their respective apartments while conversing over the phone. Phoebe is offered an opportunity to record “Smelly Cat” but struggles with the background singers. Ross’s constant presence at Monica’s and Rachel’s apartment irritates Monica, making her feel like she’s 16 again living with her brother. Meanwhile, Chandler finds a new roommate named Eddie, only to be surprised by Eddie’s lack of interest in foosball and Baywatch.
Did you know?!
• Chandler, while watching “Baywatch” with Joey, asks, “How could anyone not be in love with Yasmine Bleeth?” Matthew Perry was dating Bleeth in 1996 and 1997.
• Elizabeth Daily, often credited as E. G. Daily, sang in the dub over Lisa Kudrow in the “Smelly Cat” music video. She also appeared in the episode The One with Phoebe’s Ex-Partner (1997) as Leslie, Phoebe’s ex-partner.
• First appearance of Adam Goldberg as Eddie, who would also appear in the spin-off series Joey (2004) as Jimmy.
• First appearance of the white dog statue.
• In the credits at the beginning of the “Smelly Cat” music video, the producer of the video is listed as “BKC Records” and the director is listed as “A. Chase”. “BKC” stand for the producers of the show Bright, Kauffman, and Crane, while “A. Chase” is a reference to Adam Chase who co-wrote this episode.
• In the scene when Chandler watches Baywatch and Eddie goes into his room to read, you can see on the bottom shelf below the stereo unit, in front of the window, there is a Toronto Blue Jays cap, which is a nod to Matthew Perry’s Canadian roots.
• This is the first appearance of Phoebe’s Gibson red top, which is the fourth guitar she has used. For a person who says she doesn’t make a lot of money, this is a lot of guitars. In the first season she used a Martin D-18, and previously in this season she used Yamaha and Guild models, each in one episode.
• While on call with Chandler, Joey has slippers with fur that are designed to look like a moose. Later when he goes to see Chandler, it is shown that he also owns a hat designed like a moose.
• In 1992, a couple of years before she appeared on the show, Lisa Kudrow was in an actual music video. She appeared in Ice Cube’s music video for “True to the Game” as the girlfriend of a black man whom Ice Cube kidnaps.
• DeeDee Rescher, who played the Record Producer in this episode, later appeared in Lisa Kudrow’s HBO series The Comeback (2005) as Donna Franklin in the episode Valerie Relaxes in Palm Springs (2005).
