Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan recently endorsed fellow Irish actor Cillian Murphy as a potential 007, describing him as “magnificent” for the iconic role. Brosnan made the remarks at the Oscar Wilde awards, celebrating Irish talent in Los Angeles.
Murphy, a nominee for Best Actor at the upcoming Oscars for his role in “Oppenheimer,” attended the event at JJ Abrams’s Bad Robot Productions. Despite rumors about the Bond role, Murphy expressed focus on enjoying the awards ceremony and supporting his son Aran, making his film debut.
Brosnan, honored at the event, highlighted the connection between Ireland and America, recalling his journey to the US and praising Irish storytellers. Other honorees included visual effects supervisor Richie Baneham and actress Molly Shannon.
Baneham, known for his work on “Avatar” and its sequel, shared insights into upcoming projects and praised the film “Poor Things,” featuring Irish producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. The movie’s 11 Oscar nominations mark a record for Irish-produced films.
