Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy confirmed that filming his character’s court hearing scene was definitely his favorite part in Christopher Nolan’s latest epic drama.
In a recent interview with Collider, the Golden Globe winner opened up about the challenging experience of shooting Oppenheimer’s “very emotional and heavy” court hearing sequence, which took two weeks to film in a “tiny, sh*tty little room.” He revealed, “We did that for two weeks, so all these incredible actors, Jason Clarke and everybody, would come in and do their piece. I found that very emotional and heavy, but in a brilliant way. It was a real challenge. So, that was my favorite chunk of the movie in terms of shooting.”
Murphy explained why he loved working on the said hearing scene the most, revealing that the setting reminded him of his time in the theater. “There weren’t any moveable walls or anything like that; it was just all of us in there with this huge camera,” he added. “That felt almost like doing a play.”
The Irish actor first started working with Nolan in 2008’s The Dark Knight, where he played the villainous Scarecrow after initially auditioning for the role of Bruce Wayne/ Batman. The creative duo went on to collaborate in four more movies including Inception and Dunkirk. The Peaky Blinders actor admitted that he was shocked by Nolan’s “out of the blue” casting offer, especially when the project would be his first leading role for the acclaimed filmmaker. “I think any actor in the world would, first of all, want to work with Chris, but second of all, do a lead for him,” he said. “I can’t think of any better word than it’s a dream. It sounds like such a cliché, but it’s the truth.”
