TO CONTINUE READING PRESS HEREChloë Grace Moretz has once again addressed the viral 2016 Family Guy meme that mocked her body, urging for more compassion and kindness in the way people speak about others online.
Speaking at the red carpet premiere of The Peripheral on 11 October, the 25-year-old actress opened up about the impact of seeing memes of herself on social media. Reflecting on the experience, she shared with Entertainment Tonight, “I think the big thing is that compassion is a really key thing in humanity and just being kind with the words that you say with one another, the things you say online.”
Moretz continued, “I think compassion is key and I hope that the world can have a little bit more of that.”
The actress was referring to a particular image from 2016, where she was photographed walking into a hotel carrying a pizza. The photo quickly became the subject of mockery after being compared to a character from Family Guy. In the season 10 episode “Amish Guy,” a fictional character named Legs Go All The Way Up Griffin, who has exaggeratedly long legs and a short torso, became the subject of internet memes. People edited Moretz’s photo to distort her midsection, making it appear shorter and her legs unnaturally long, comparing her to the Family Guy character.
In a previous interview with Hunger magazine last month, Moretz revealed the emotional toll the meme took on her. She said, “I just remember sitting there and thinking, my body is being used as a joke and it’s something that I can’t change about who I am, and it is being posted all over Instagram. It was something so benign as walking into a hotel with leftovers.”
Despite the hurt, Moretz shared that many people dismissed her concerns, defending the meme as “funny.”
Moretz’s call for empathy and kindness comes as she prepares for the release of her new show, The Peripheral, which debuts on Prime Video on 21 October.
