The tragic incident occurred around 4:53 p.m. on Saturday in Newton, located approximately 44 miles northwest of Charlotte, according to a press release from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrived at the scene to find 40-year-old Jeffery Michael Guida, who had been shot and was pronounced dead upon their arrival. According to eyewitnesses, Guida and the suspect, identified as 75-year-old Terrell Eugene Giddens, had stopped and exited their vehicles near an intersection when the altercation escalated.
Giddens allegedly fired multiple shots into Guida’s vehicle, where his three children—ages 2, 11, and 13—were sitting. Thankfully, none of the children were physically injured during the incident.
Eyewitnesses provided descriptions of the vehicles and the individuals involved, which helped authorities locate Giddens at a residence in Sherrills Ford. He has since been charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Giddens appeared in court on Monday, where he informed the judge that his family would hire an attorney. Meanwhile, Guida’s family was present but chose not to speak to the media, according to local news outlet WSOC-TV. The Catawba County Clerk’s Office later confirmed that Giddens had waived his right to a court-appointed attorney, though it remains unclear who is representing him in court.
This tragic incident is currently under investigation.
