Cillian Murphy will return as the iconic gangster Tommy Shelby, while fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan was previously confirmed as a new addition to the cast.
Joining the ensemble are Ned Dennehy, who portrayed Charlie Strong—an uncle figure to the Shelby family; Packy Lee as Tommy’s friend Johnny Dogs; and Ian Peck as Curly, who worked for Charlie. The film will also feature Jay Lycurgo from Titans, alongside previously announced actors Rebecca Ferguson from Dune and Tim Roth from Pulp Fiction.
The film is being developed by creator Steven Knight, continuing the narrative of the original BBC series, which aired for six seasons from 2013 to 2022. The story will shift focus to the Shelby family’s journey during the Second World War, following their rise in the aftermath of the First World War.
Production on the film commenced last week, with the setting described as the “lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s.” The film is being produced by Knight in collaboration with Cillian Murphy, Patrick Holland, and Guy Heeley, in association with BBC Film.
