Huge Peaky Blinders movie update as iconic Hollywood A-lister joins cast

Returning to his Peaky Blinders role of the piercing-eyed Tommy Shelby, the flat-capped Brummie crime boss, is Cillian Murphy. A Hollywood star was recently announced as the latest person to join the movie

Peaky Blinders fans have been at the edge of their seats with excitement over the film version of the iconic series being greenlit.

Returning to his role of the piercing-eyed Tommy Shelby, the flat-capped Brummie crime boss, is Cillian Murphy. The sixth and final series of the series ended in 2022. Instead of a seventh series, it was announced that a feature-length film would be released sometime in 2025, distributed by Netflix.

Netflix previously dropped a tease on social media – a photo of the hefty script – but with cast and crew tight-lipped, there are plenty of burning questions that need to be answered. Who’s in the cast? Well, much to the delight of fans, it was recently announced that A-list star Rebecca Ferguson has joined the Peaky Blinders family.

The Hollywood star is best known for her role as Lady Jessica in Dune, MI6 agent Ilsa Faust in three Mission Impossible movies, Jenny Lind in The Greatest Showman, Juliette Nichols in Apple TV+’s Silo and Anna Watson in The Girl on the Train. Netflix UK & Ireland shared on their official X page: “NEWS: Rebecca Ferguson will join Cillian Murphy in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film!”

Fans were over the moon with the news and rushed to the comment section to share their excitement. One delighted user commented: “Hells yea can’t wait,” while another posted: “Oh man. Count me in, queen!” One user wrote: “Love her sooooo much yesss!” and another said: “Most beautiful woman in the world.”

Plot details of the upcoming movie are being kept under lock and key, although writer Steven Knight has previously revealed that the series finale in 2022 set up a film to be set during the Second World War. The BBC show’s six seasons spanned the end of the First World War through to the end of Prohibition in the US in 1933.

At this point, will Tommy be a much older and wiser character? Cillian said: “If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.” Knight, who has written the screenplay, explained: “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Director Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the first season and is collaborating with Steven Knight, told Netflix: “It seems Thomas Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven and Tom on the film version. This is one for the fans.”
