The One with the Chick and the Duck

Upon seeing chicks on television, Joey decides to purchase one for himself and Chandler. This decision leads to conflicts between them, ultimately resulting in their decision to return the chick. However, they end up adopting a duck as well.
Meanwhile, Ross is scheduled to appear on the Discovery Channel but forgoes the opportunity to assist Rachel, who needs to go to the hospital due to a broken rib. Additionally, Pete continues to express his affection for Monica by offering her a restaurant. Although she initially declines, they eventually share a romantic moment.

Did you know ?!

• The scene where Joey hugs the little chicken and Chandler remarks, “Easy Lenny”, is a reference to the character ‘Lenny’ from the John Steinbeck classic novel, ‘Of Mice and Men’, who held small animals too tightly and killed them accidentally.
• At the beginning of the episode Gunther brings Rachel a cocoa outside of Central Perk, even though it’s against the rules. In The One with Frank Jr. (1996) Gunther sends Rachel outside to get the cup Phoebe had outside, but of course he would bend the rules for Rachel.
• At around 17 mins, Little Yasmine (the baby chick) poops on the Lazy Boy while Joey is speaking to Chandler about why he did not get rid of the chick.
• Starting with this episode until the season 3 finale, Matthew Perry has a goatee which in recent revelations revealed he was taking 55 Vicodin a day just to not feel sick.
• Final appearance of the Moondance Diner.
• Phoebe is seen wearing the same outfit in this episode as in The One with the Jam (1996) where she had her own stalker (played by David Arquette).
• The chick is a male as seen in later episodes when it grows into a rooster and the duck is female as indicated by her all white, bland appearance. Joey and Chandler often call the chick female and the duck male.
• Monica realizes she’s attracted to Pete at the end of this episode, but the question of whether she takes the head chef job at his restaurant is not fully resolved. (She said yes, then no, then there’s the big kiss.) There is no mention of her work status again until the next season when Monica is catering a party for her mother (The One with the ‘Cuffs (1997)).
