NCIS has been renewed for a 22nd season, coming to you shortly…

  • NCIS season 22 gets renewed at CBS as the ongoing procedural franchise continues to expand with new spinoffs that are in development.

NCIS has officially been renewed for season 22 as the CBS franchise continues to expand with new spinoffs on the way. Originally conceived as a spinoff to the 1995 series JAG, the military procedural premiered in September 2003. It has since become a massive franchise, spawning a variety of similar shows that take place in different locations around the world. This includes the ongoing spinoffs NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: Sydney, the latter of which was recently renewed for season 2.

Now, TVLine has confirmed that NCIS season 22 has been renewed at CBS, keeping the flagship series going even as new spinoffs are being produced. The confirmation means it will be airing at the same time as the upcoming NCIS: Origins, a prequel series following a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It may also still be airing when an untitled spinoff about Tony and Ziva starts, though it’s unclear when this new show will arrive.

NCIS’ Renewal Is A Good Sign For The Whole Franchise

The flagship series continuing with season 22 is a good sign of how robust the franchise is as the number of shows involved continues to grow. As mentioned previously, NCIS: Sydney season 2 has also been confirmed, showing how existing shows are also still important as the franchise keeps expanding. This means that, so far, four shows in the franchise are going to be in production at the same time, possibly even airing together as well.

The only unclear renewal so far is NCIS: Hawai’i season 4, which has yet to be confirmed by CBS despite the parent series now getting more episodes. Given the announcement of two new series focused on characters from the original show, it’s unclear what this might mean for CBS’ preexisting spinoff. There’s a real possibility the series gets cancelled to make room for Origins. However, CBS has aired three spinoffs at the same time before with the now-ended New Orleans and Los Angeles, meaning there’s no telling what Hawai’i‘s true future will be.

Even though the fate of one spinoff is still up in the air, the renewal of the original NCIS shows just how well the procedural is doing, even after over 20 years of new episodes. While the show’s cast and the cases they solve have radically changed over the course of history, the series still maintains the same premise it did when it first premiered. Because of how long-running the show is, it’s unsurprising that it continues to have many viewers. This will likely continue to be the case, even as the series introduces new spinoffs to its universe.
