Cillian Murphy reprises his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in a script penned by the show’s creator, Steven Knight. Knight is producing the film alongside Murphy, Patrick Holland, and Guy Heeley. On Monday, Netflix shared an image of Murphy in character, capturing the essence of the notorious gangster, alongside Knight on set.
The film will be produced in association with BBC Film, featuring a cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan, with additional cast members yet to be announced.
“I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders,” said show creator Steven Knight.
Director Tom Harper expressed excitement about the project, stating, “There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement among our outstanding cast and crew. We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”
Peaky Blinders first premiered in 2013 on BBC Two, later gaining a dedicated following when Netflix acquired the rights to stream the series in the US. The sixth and final season aired in 2022, with the announcement of a feature film coming shortly thereafter.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans,” Murphy remarked in a statement at the time.
