It looks like a lot more content from the world of Peaky Blinders is on the way, as Netflix is reportedly planning multiple spinoffs.
Despite ending almost three years ago, Peaky Blinders remains a popular Netflix series, thanks in part to the enduring charm of star Cillian Murphy, who had a landmark year in 2023 after starring in Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed Oppenheimer.
Murphy has continued to make waves this awards season alongside his “Barbenheimer” counterpart Margot Robbie, star of the blockbuster film Barbie. The Irish actor is currently a frontrunner for an Academy Award nomination for his powerful lead performance in Oppenheimer.
This renewed popularity has led many fans to revisit Murphy’s work in the British period crime drama, which ran for six seasons on BBC (with Netflix handling international distribution outside the UK). It seems Netflix has taken note, as on December 17, 2024, Bloomberg reported that the streaming giant is actively pursuing ideas for at least two new Peaky Blinders spinoffs.
According to the report, “One of those would be set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century, a couple of decades after the original Peaky Blinders, while another would focus on Polly, the matriarch of the criminal Shelby clan.”
The Boston-set spinoff would likely take place around the 1950s, following the next generation of the infamous Shelby street gang. Meanwhile, the second spinoff is expected to serve as a prequel series centered on Polly Gray. Since Helen McCrory, the iconic actress who portrayed Polly, tragically passed away in April 2021, it is likely the show will cast a younger version of the character to explore her early life.
These new projects signal Netflix’s commitment to expanding the Peaky Blinders universe, ensuring fans can delve deeper into the rich history and captivating characters of the Shelby family and beyond.
