‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight penned the screenplay, with Tom Harper set to direct.
Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy is officially returning to the Peaky Blinders universe, confirming his involvement in a new Netflix movie based on the beloved series. Murphy, who starred as Thomas Shelby, the notorious gangster and war hero in 1900s Birmingham, said in a statement: “This is one for the fans.”
The film, described as a continuation of the Peaky Blinders story, will be directed by Tom Harper, who helmed episodes from the series’ first season. Plot details remain under wraps, but Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has penned the screenplay. Knight will also co-produce alongside Caryn Mandabach, Murphy, and Guy Heeley, with BBC Film backing the project.
Murphy expressed his excitement, stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders.”
Knight added, “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Harper reflected on the early days of the series: “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences worldwide on Netflix.”
Murphy, fresh off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, is also working on the upcoming sequel 28 Years Later, but fans can look forward to his iconic return as Thomas Shelby in the Peaky Blinders movie.
