The One with the Race Car Bed

Joey becomes a teacher at a learning extension course on soap acting and enjoys the newfound respect from his inexperienced students. Monica purchases a bed from Janice’s ex at a remarkably low price; Phoebe signs for the delivery, only to discover that it is a race car bed intended for a child. Rachel persuades Ross to join her for dinner with her father, who criticizes Ross more harshly than anticipated. The following day, Ross and Dr. Green bond over their mutual amusement at Rachel’s chiropractor and her various shortcomings. When Joey discovers that one of his students is auditioning for the same role he desires, he attempts to sabotage the student by advising him to portray the character as gay. However, the results are unexpected, and Joey is further surprised by what he encounters at the Mattress King while trying to retrieve Monica’s original bed.

Did you know?!

• The first time we are made aware of Gunther’s love for Rachel.
• The Mattress King is referenced in the Frasier episode Hot Pursuit (2000), when Niles (David Hyde Pierce) talks about expecting cheating from a mattress king but not a garbage king.
• Rachel’s dad tipped 4% on a $200 bill. That means he only tipped $8.
• Rachel says that if she squints then Ross could look like Alan Alda. Jennifer Aniston is in The Object of My Affection (1998) where Alan Alda plays her brother-in-law.
• When Chandler is ‘driving’ the bed, the mattress is lower than it was earlier. Previously, it was almost even with the sides of the bed but when he is sitting on it clearly one of the mattresses have been removed.
