’28 Years Later’ Set for 2025 Release Date from Sony

The film serves as a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later.

The highly anticipated third installment in Danny Boyle’s 28 franchise, 28 Years Later, is officially set to hit theaters in summer 2025, according to an announcement made by Sony Pictures on Friday.

The film, directed by Boyle with a script penned by Alex Garland, will follow up on the critically acclaimed 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). Rumors about the project had surfaced earlier this year, with reports suggesting that Boyle and Garland intend to launch a new trilogy, beginning with this installment.

In addition to Boyle and Garland, original producers Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice will return, alongside Bernie Bellew. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original 28 Days Later, is also joining the project as an executive producer.

28 Days Later was a breakout hit, both commercially and critically, revitalizing the zombie horror genre and inspiring a wave of apocalyptic entertainment such as World War Z, Zombieland, The Walking Dead, and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead.

While specific plot details for 28 Years Later remain under wraps, fans are eager to see where the story goes after Murphy’s character, who in the first film, awoke from a coma to discover a world ravaged by a deadly virus.

28 Years Later is slated for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
